What is MCT Oil?

MCT oil, also known as fractionated coconut oil, is a clear, odorless oil extracted from coconuts. MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglyceride: triglycerides with a medium fatty acid chain. The oil consists almost exclusively of caprylic acid (C8) and capric acid (C10), the two medium-chain fatty acids from coconut oil that are quickly absorbed by skin and hair.

Our MCT oil is food grade, which means that it meets the strict purity requirements for food. The oil is remarkably stable, hardly oxidizes and always remains liquid, even in the refrigerator.

How is MCT Oil made?

MCT oil is created by fractionation of coconut oil. In this process, the coconut oil is first melted and then slowly cooled. Different fatty acids solidify at different temperatures, so that the long-chain fatty acids (such as lauric acid and myristic acid) first solidify and can be separated from the medium-chain fatty acids. What remains is a clear, odorless oil that consists almost exclusively of caprylic acid and capric acid.

What is the difference between MCT Oil and Coconut Oil?

MCT oil and coconut oil have the same origin, but behave very differently. Coconut oil contains both medium-chain and long-chain fatty acids, including lauric acid. As a result, coconut oil is solid at room temperature, feels rich and has a typical coconut smell. MCT oil consists only of the medium-chain fatty acids and is therefore always liquid, colorless and completely odorless.

For cosmetics, this means that MCT oil is a lighter, more neutral base oil than coconut oil. It's ideal if you're working with essential oils, as it doesn't overpower their scent, and it's a lot less harsh on the skin.

Benefits of MCT Oil for your skin

Light texture, does not feel greasy
MCT oil absorbs quickly and does not leave a greasy film. This makes it suitable for almost any skin type, including combination skin.

Stable and long-lasting
Due to its composition, MCT oil hardly oxidizes and has a very long shelf life. This also makes it nice to add to other, more sensitive oils.

Supports hydrated skin
The high content of capric acid and caprylic acid supports the skin and helps prevent moisture loss.

How do you use MCT Oil?

For your skin, apply a few drops of MCT oil to cleansed, slightly damp skin. For makeup removal, apply some oil to a cotton pad and wipe gently. For your hair, massage a few drops into the lengths and ends or use MCT oil as a detangler for tangles.

MCT oil is also a great base for DIY products such as roll-ons, facial serums, scrubs and hair masks. Due to its neutral scent and light texture, the scent and effect of added essential oils or active substances are optimally preserved.

Tips for using MCT Oil

  • MCT oil always remains liquid, even in the refrigerator. Very handy for in roll-ons and other DIY products.
  • Due to its neutral scent and color, MCT oil is ideal as a base oil for essential oils, perfumes and aromatic products.
  • MCT oil mixes excellently with more intensive oils to lighten their texture and extend their shelf life.
