What is Lemon Essential Oil (FCF-Free, Distilled)?

Lemon Essential Oil FCF-free is the steam-distilled version of lemon oil, with the furocoumarins that cause phototoxicity not present. The fresh, lively aroma brings the sunshine into your home, with a slightly sharper top note than the cold-pressed variant. The Latin name is Citrus Limon, and the oil is extracted from the peel of the lemon fruit via steam distillation.

FCF stands for "furocoumarin-free". In steam distillation, the heavier, non-volatile furocoumarins remain in the residue, making the final oil naturally free of these phototoxic molecules. Therefore, this lemon can be used without restriction in products worn on the skin during the day.

The oil blends beautifully with other citrus oils such as bergamot FCF and pink grapefruit, with spicy oils such as rosemary, eucalyptus and peppermint, and with floral oils such as lavender and ylang ylang.

How is Lemon Essential Oil (FCF-Free) made?

Unlike the cold-pressed lemon, this variant is extracted by steam distillation. The lemon peels are exposed to steam, which releases the volatile aromatic components. This steam is then condensed, and the essential oil separates from the water.

The heavier furocoumarins, including bergapten, cannot keep up during steam distillation because they are not volatile enough. They remain in the distillation residue. As a result, distilled lemon is naturally non-phototoxic.

The scent is slightly less full and slightly sharper at the top than the cold-pressed version, but the lemon characteristic remains clearly present. For applications where phototoxicity is an issue, this small loss of odour far outweighs the practical benefits.

Benefits of Lemon Essential Oil (FCF-Free)

Non-phototoxic, so safe for day care
The main advantage over cold-pressed lemon. This variant can be incorporated into day creams, body lotions, deodorants and all other products that are worn on the skin during the day.

Has an uplifting and clarifying effect
The vibrant aroma of lemon boosts the tired mind and helps with focus and concentration. An excellent choice for a work diffuser or morning shower gel.

Regulates sebum production
Lemon has a natural astringent effect and is often used in formulations for oily or combination skin. It can help to refine pores and balance the skin.

Protects by antioxidants
The oil contains antioxidants that can help protect the skin from free radicals, contributing to a healthy, youthful appearance.

Versatile in cosmetics and household
Due to its non-phototoxic nature, the distilled lemon is suitable for a wider range of applications than the cold-pressed variety.

How to use Lemon Essential Oil (FCF-free)?

When using on the skin, always dilute essential oil in a carrier oil or butter. For homemade care, we recommend a working dose of 1 percent (1 gram per 100 grams of product). Read the explanation below for more information. Suitable carriers are, for example, Jojoba Oil, Zoete Amandelolie of Shea Butter.

In a day cream or day serum
The big advantage of this distilled version: you can safely use the lemon oil in day care without worrying about sun exposure. Especially nice for oily or combination skin that could use some extra balance.

In a diffuser
Put 4 to 6 drops in a aroma diffuser and fill your office with a fresh, uplifting scent. Combine with Lavender For a soft, calming atmosphere, or with peppermint for a focus boost.

In a deodorant
Lemon is a natural fat regulator and has a fresh aroma, suitable for deodorant formulations. Avoid the cold-pressed version for this application and choose the FCF variant.

In zeep, douchegel of shampoo
In rinse-off products, the oil does not remain on the skin, allowing for wider doses. A great choice for a fresh morning ritual.

In cleaning mixtures
The distilled lemon also has a degreasing effect and is a popular addition to homemade cleaning products.

What is the difference with the cold-pressed lemon?

In addition to this distilled variant, we also have the cold-pressed lemon essential oil in our range. The cold-pressed variant has a slightly fuller, more lively scent, but contains furocoumarins that make it phototoxic to the skin in combination with UV light. Therefore, the cold-pressed lemon should not be used in products worn on the skin during the day.

Choose this distilled FCF version if you want to incorporate lemon into a day care, deodorant or sun-exposed product. Choose the cold-pressed variant for evening products, perfume, diffuser or rinse-off applications where you want the full citrus characteristic.

Tips for using Lemon Essential Oil (FCF-free)

  • Store the oil in a cool, dark place. Citrus oils are more susceptible to oxidation than other essential oils, and proper storage significantly extends their shelf life.
  • Always close the bottle tightly after use. Contact with air can cause the oil to lose its fragrance and effect more quickly.
  • Test on a small area of skin before using the oil for the first time, especially if you have sensitive skin.
  • Always work with grams and percentages, not drops. Droplets vary in size and make it difficult to stay within safe limits.

Points of attention and side effects

Lemon Essential Oil (FCF-free, distilled) is not phototoxic and can therefore be used for sunlight without restriction. This is the whole point of this distilled variety. However, it remains important to always use the oil diluted, never pure on the skin.

Our practical working dose: 1 percent
For homemade care, we recommend a dosage of 1 percent (1 gram per 100 grams of product). Citrus oils naturally contain allergens such as limonene, linalool, citral, and geraniol. When you combine multiple essential oils in one recipe, these allergens accumulate and you can quickly exceed the legal allergen limits. A working dose of 1 percent gives you the space to use multiple oils in one recipe without going over those limits.

For products that you rinse off, such as soap, shower gel or shampoo, longer maximums apply because the oil does not remain on the skin.

Not recommended for use during pregnancy without consultation with an expert. Keep out of reach of children. When in doubt or with sensitive skin, always test on a small area first and wait 24 hours before using it on larger areas. Not intended to be ingested.
