What is Calendula Oil?

Calendula oil is a traditional oil macerate that has been used for centuries to support the skin with irritation, dryness and chapping. Our calendula oil is organic and is made by steeping the flowers of the calendula plant (Calendula officinalis) in organic, cold-pressed sweet almond oil. The oil has a beautiful golden yellow to orange color and a light, soft scent.

How is Calendula Oil made?

Our calendula oil is a macerate: dried calendula flowers are immersed in organic sweet almond oil during a long steeping process. During this process, the active substances from the flowers dissolve in the oil. The end result consists of 20% calendula extract and 80% organic, cold-pressed sweet almond oil. Then the oil is filtered and ready for use.

The difference with calendula essential oil is therefore in the preparation. A macerate is much softer, widely applicable and perfect for use pure on the skin.

Why is Calendula Oil so special?

The effect of calendula comes mainly from the active substances that change into the oil during the steeping process. Calendula flowers are rich in faradiol esters (powerful natural anti-inflammatories), triterpenoids, flavonoids and carotenoids. These plant substances support the skin in recovery, soothe irritation and give the oil its warm orange color.

Because the base is organic sweet almond oil, you also get a rich, nourishing effect and a mild character that is well tolerated by most skin types.

Benefits of Calendula Oil for your skin

Soothes irritated skin
The faradiol esters and triterpenoids in calendula are known for their soothing effect on irritated, red or chapped skin.

Supports the skin in recovery
Calendula has been used for generations to support the skin in recovery, for example after exposure to cold, wind or sun.

Nourishes dry and sensitive skin
The combination of calendula extract and sweet almond oil makes this oil a rich but mild care for dry or sensitive skin.

How to use Calendula Oil?

For the body, apply a thin layer of calendula oil to cleansed, slightly damp skin. For specific areas, massage a few drops into the skin that could use some extra attention. A tablespoon in a warm bath gives a soothing effect, and the layer of oil that remains on the skin after drying nourishes and protects the rest of the day.

Calendula oil is also a wonderful ingredient in DIY products such as lip balms, hand creams and face serums.

Tips for using Calendula Oil

  • For baby skin, it is better not to use it pure. Our calendula oil is based on sweet almond oil, and the skin of newborns and young babies is still immature. Large amounts of oleic acid can unbalance the skin barrier. Do you still want to use calendula oil for baby skin? Then mix with a linoleic acid-rich oil such as safflower oil or grapeseed oil.
  • Do you have a nut allergy? Then be careful, because the base oil is sweet almond oil. Test on a small area of skin first.
  • Calendula oil has a warm orange color that comes from the carotenoids in the flowers. On light skin, this can temporarily give a slight yellow tint.
  • The oil mixes excellently with other oils and is a great ingredient in DIY skincare.
