What is Petitgrain Essential Oil?

Petitgrain Essential Oil is a soothing, fresh oil with a scent that is somewhere between citrus and blossom, with a light woody and spicy undertone. The Latin name is Citrus Aurantium Amara, and the oil is extracted from the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree. The color is light yellow to pale green.

The name "petitgrain" comes from the French for "small grains", referring to the small, unripe fruits from which fragrance was originally extracted. Nowadays, the oil is mainly made from the leaves and twigs, because this gives a higher yield and the harvest is not at the expense of fruit production.

Petitgrain blends beautifully with other floral oils such as lavender, neroli, rose geranium and ylang ylang, with citrus oils such as bergamot and mandarin, and with woody oils such as sandalwood and cedarwood. It is a popular top note in perfumery and in calming evening blends.

How is Petitgrain Essential Oil made?

Petitgrain is extracted by steam distillation of the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree. The leaves are harvested, cut and exposed to steam, which releases the volatile aromatic components. This steam is then condensed and the essential oil separates from the water.

Because petitgrain comes from the leaves and not from the skin of the fruit, the oil does not contain furocoumarins. As a result, petitgrain is not phototoxic and can be used for sunlight without restriction. This is an important difference from other oils from the citrus family such as bergamot and lemon.

Benefits of Petitgrain Essential Oil

Non-phototoxic
Unlike most citrus oils from the peel, petitgrain can be used in day care without any problems.

Brings peace and tranquility
The scent of petitgrain soothes immediately and is an excellent choice for an evening diffuser or night cream. Helps to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the day.

Brightens without stimulating
The slightly peppery and fruity aroma takes away stress and soothes heavy emotions without stimulating the mind. A nice balance between uplifting and calming.

Gives courage in the face of emotional challenges
Petitgrain is traditionally appreciated in periods of severe grief, fear or emotional turmoil. It helps to pick up the thread again and find confidence.

An affordable alternative to neroli
Petitgrain and neroli come from the same plant and share some aromatic facets. Petitgrain is much more affordable and suitable for applications where you want a neroli-like scent without the high price.

How to use Petitgrain Essential Oil?

When using on the skin, always dilute essential oil in a carrier oil or butter. For homemade care, we recommend a working dose of 1 percent (1 gram per 100 grams of product). Read the explanation below for more information. Suitable carriers are, for example, Jojoba Oil, Zoete Amandelolie of Shea Butter.

In an evening diffuser
Put 4 to 6 drops in a aroma diffuser for a soothing atmosphere. Combine with Lavender and bergamot for a classic relaxing blend.

On your pillow for a deep night's sleep
Druppel 1 druppel petitgrain, 1 druppel lavender en 1 druppel bergamot on a tissue or pillowcase for a soothing sleep ritual. Avoid dripping directly on white pillowcases to avoid staining.

In a night cream or body lotion
Petitgrain is excellent for evening care that conditions the skin and calms the mind.

In a DIY perfume
Petitgrain works beautifully as a heart note in a refined perfume. Combine with bergamot as a top note and sandalwood as a base note.

In a day cream
Because petitgrain is not phototoxic, it can also be incorporated into day care for a fresh, calming aroma.

What is the difference with Petitgrain Bigarade?

In addition to this petitgrain, we also have a Petitgrain Bigarade in our range. "Bigarade" refers specifically to the bitter orange (Citrus aurantium var. amara). Both varieties actually come from the same plant species, but Bigarade is usually standardized on a specific aroma profile from the Mediterranean region (often Italy or Spain), while our regular petitgrain is more broadly classified. Smells are close to each other.

What is special about it?

The bitter orange tree yields no less than three different essential oils:

  • Petitgrain from the leaves and twigs, which you are looking at now.
  • Neroli from the white blossoms, precious and soft-floral.
  • Bitter Orange from the skin of the fruit, phototoxic (we do not have this in our range).

Petitgrain has been widely used in fine perfumery since the 18th century, especially in Eau de Cologne and related compositions.

Tips for Using Petitgrain Essential Oil

  • Store the oil in a cool, dark place. Proper storage extends the shelf life considerably.
  • Always close the bottle tightly after use. Contact with air can cause the oil to lose its fragrance and effect more quickly.
  • Test on a small area of skin before using the oil for the first time, especially if you have sensitive skin.
  • Always work with grams and percentages, not drops. Droplets vary in size and make it difficult to stay within safe limits.

Points of attention and side effects

Petitgrain Essential Oil is not phototoxic and can therefore be used for sunlight without restriction. However, it remains important to always use the oil diluted, never pure on the skin.

Our practical working dose: 1 percent
For homemade care, we recommend a dosage of 1 percent (1 gram per 100 grams of product). Essential oils naturally contain allergens such as limonene, linalool, and geraniol. When you combine multiple essential oils in one recipe, these allergens accumulate and you can quickly exceed the legal allergen limits. A working dose of 1 percent gives you the space to use multiple oils in one recipe without going over those limits.

For products that you rinse off, such as soap, shower gel or shampoo, longer maximums apply because the oil does not remain on the skin.

Not recommended for use during pregnancy without consultation with an expert. Keep out of reach of children. When in doubt or with sensitive skin, always test on a small area first and wait 24 hours before using it on larger areas. Not intended to be ingested.
