What is Jojoba Oil?

Jojoba oil is one of the most versatile natural base oils. The oil is extracted from the seeds of the jojoba shrub (Simmondsia chinensis), which grows primarily in the arid regions of the southwestern United States and Mexico. The name is actually a bit misleading, because jojoba oil is technically not an oil but a liquid wax. As a result, it has a completely different composition than other vegetable oils.

How is Jojoba Oil made?

The seeds of the jojoba bush are harvested and cold-pressed. With cold-pressed oil, no heat above 30 degrees is used during pressing, so that the natural composition is fully preserved. Then the oil is filtered and ready for use. Refined jojoba oil is clear and colorless, while the unrefined variety has a golden yellow color and a light, nutty scent.

Why is Jojoba Oil so special?

Jojoba oil consists for the most part of long wax esters (especially eicoenic acid and docoenic acid esters) rather than regular triglycerides like other oils. This composition is remarkably similar to the sebum that our own skin produces. As a result, jojoba oil is well tolerated by almost every skin type and can help to balance sebum production.

Because of that low content of triglycerides, jojoba oil also has a very long shelf life and hardly oxidizes. Therefore, it is often added to other, more sensitive oils to extend their shelf life.

Does Jojoba Oil Get Stuck In The Cold?

Yes, you can, and that's completely normal. Jojoba oil gradually solidifies at temperatures below about 10 to 15 degrees. You will first see cloudy clouds forming, and in real cold the whole bottle can become thick and white. That's just part of this oil and has nothing to do with the quality. Let the bottle come to room temperature for a while or warm it between your hands, and the oil will become clear and liquid again.

Benefits of Jojoba Oil for your skin

Suitable for all skin types
Due to its sebum-like composition, jojoba oil is well tolerated by almost every skin type, from dry to oily and mixed.

Helps balance sebum production
Because jojoba oil is so similar to the body's own sebum, it can help the skin signal that there is enough sebum. This is great for oily or combination skin that shines quickly.

Light and non-greasy skin feel
The oil feels light and absorbs quickly, without leaving a greasy film. Wonderful to use daily on damp skin or as a base for a facial serum.

Great as a make-up remover
Due to its mild character, jojoba oil is also suitable for removing make-up around the eyes.

Benefits of Jojoba Oil for your hair

Cares for dry and dull hair
Jojoba oil is great for dry, porous and dull hair. The oil gives a natural shine and softness without feeling heavy.

Cares for the scalp
Due to its sebum-like composition, jojoba oil also works well for a dry or itchy scalp.

For your beard
A few drops of jojoba oil in beard and the skin underneath nourishes the hair, feels light and softens the skin.

How to use Jojoba Oil?

For your skin, massage a few drops of jojoba oil into cleansed, slightly damp skin. For your hair, massage a few drops into the ends and possibly into the scalp, leave on for about 10 minutes and wash it out with your regular shampoo. For your beard, apply a few drops to the beard and skin after showering.

Tips for Using Jojoba Oil

  • Jojoba oil can become solid at temperatures below 10 to 15 degrees. That's just part of it and repairs itself at room temperature.
  • Due to its low triglyceride content, jojoba oil has a very long shelf life and is also nice to add to other, more sensitive oils to extend their shelf life.
  • Jojoba oil is a great base oil to mix with thicker oils such as castor oil, or with intensive oils such as rosehip oil.
