What is calcium carbonate?

Chalk only for the blackboard or sidewalk? Not at all! Calcium carbonate (the official name for chalk) is an extremely versatile remedy to use in and around the home. You can use it to remove stains from your clothes, keep ants at a distance and (finally!) unlock your bike.

How to use it

Have you spilled grease on your favorite shirt? Or even on your suede shoes? Immediately rub some chalk over it and throw it in the wash. Not those suede shoes of course, you leave the chalk on overnight and then you rub the grease off the next day.

Have you inherited a 96-piece silver cutlery? Make a bundle of cheesecloth and put some chalk in it, keep this bundle with the cutlery to prevent the silver from discoloring. This way it is always ready for use (at Christmas, for example)!

Calcium carbonate can also help you keep your tools rust-free. If you keep some chalk in your toolbox, you prevent the tool from rusting and it will last much longer!

And if your key no longer goes smoothly into your bike lock, it can help to put a little chalk on the key and put it in the keyhole a few times (put a little new chalk on it each time). You'll see that it's a lot easier to unlock that bike after that!

What you also didn't know...

Did you know that lime, the big brother of chalk, was already used in prehistoric times to make wall drawings? Later, the Romans even made cement from limestone, by mixing it with volcanic ash. So you see how versatile this natural remedy is!
